About Harry Hynes Hospice

For over four decades, Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice has been the leading non-profit hospice provider in South Central and Southeast Kansas. Serving 25 counties, our mission is to enable people to live with dignity and hope while coping with loss and terminal illness. Annually, we care for more than 3,700 patients and their families. This vital work is provided by 180 local employees, supported by over 300 volunteers who contribute their time and talents, as well as nearly 2,700 donors who financially back our vision.

Our agency has several unique attributes that set us apart. We are one of the few providers that specialize in caring for pediatric patients, with an experienced and sensitive approach to the unique needs of children. Our agency’s Medicare.gov ratings are among the highest, based on feedback from families and caregivers of those we have served. By operating our own in-house pharmacy, we can provide needed medications in a timely manner while using resources efficiently. Additionally, we have the area’s only hospice center, enabling short-term closer monitoring and care for hospice patients with acute pain or symptoms related to their illness.

To further support our patients, our agency employs a dedicated triage staff to handle evening and weekend patients’ needs, relieving the daily staff of those additional responsibilities. Recognizing the emotional sensitivity of the hospice profession, our agency values work-life balance for our employees, resulting in staff longevity that exceeds industry standards.

As a nonprofit hospice, we prioritize the needs of our patients and their families over financial gain. Our sole focus is delivering excellence in hospice services for patients and families navigating the difficult journey of losing a loved one.

Mission, Vision, Values

Our mission is to enable people to live with dignity and hope while coping with loss and terminal illness.  We do this through experienced compassionate care, open and honest communication, and providing services that respect and uphold the dignity of our patients.

We are a non-profit agency. Our number one priority is our patients and their families. On those two merits alone, we have become the leader in end-of-life care in the communities we serve.

Over the past 40 years, we have developed thousands of personalized care plans for patients and their families. Experience is gained, but trust is earned. Our reputation as a premier hospice care provider in the communities we serve is one we’re beyond proud of.

Dr. Harry Hynes

Our History

In the early 1980’s, a group of medical professionals and local leaders came together to address the vital need for support care of the terminally ill. These volunteers laid the groundwork for establishing a hospice program within the community – Hospice of Wichita.

Hospice of Wichita was founded as Wichita’s original and only non-profit hospice, serving our first patient in October of 1983. In 1984, we were the first hospice in Kansas to be certified by HCFA as a provider of the Medicare Hospice Benefit.

After that time, other hospice programs emerged in several surrounding counties. In 1989, Hospice of Wichita merged with Butler County Hospice and became Hospice Inc.

As the need for hospice grew, our services expanded to include counties in South Central and Southeast Kansas.

In 2002, we became Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, in honor of Dr. Harry Hynes, one of the original founding members.

What does being a non-profit hospice mean?

Not everyone has insurance or the ability to pay for our services. At Harry Hynes Hospice we care for all, regardless of ability to pay. That is why we rely on gifting to help balance the costs of care.
